love

Today I was browsing the blog, and just wanted to say how very happy I am to see inspiration from the three most amazing women I know. Every time I see this space I feel lucky to have such wonderful friends, and I love that they feed my brain and soul with beautiful things.

Not to sound maternal, but Gigi just finished law school this week and I am so proud. I had some wonderful girlfriends in law school but none were as down to Earth and raw as my Gigi. She is beautiful, and smart, and I can't wait to see where she goes- and I can't wait to be a part of her new adventure in life.

Peach is amazing. I have never met someone in my life who I believed in more than this beautiful woman. Peach has so many incredible things ahead of her that are just waiting to be discovered. She sees the same beauty that I see in the world, and so when we are together we are just surrounded by majestic mother earth.

Care is my newest soul sister. The first 5 seconds we were together I knew we were going to be great friends. We have the funniest things in common, and I feel like the best part of our relationship is that I have just let her right into my heart and she did the same. This one will change the world, and I can't wait to hear all the updates.

I love you all, thank you for being my friends. Thank you for your love and all that you bring to my life, including this blog.

Seductive Meals, part deux.

Cioppino, Zuppe di Pesce, Bouillabaisse...a soup by any other name would still taste as briny and delicious and seductive. It also fulfills an important qualification of a pre-liaison meal by not filling you up too much! Beware if your beau or belle is allergic to shellfish...

Try this:
6 c home-made fish stock or chicken stock
1/2 lb mussels
1/2 lb clams
1/4 lb shrimp
1/4 lb calamari
1/2 lb firm white fish, cut into bite-sized pieces
1/2 onion or 2 shallots, chopped finely
3 cloves garlic, ditto
1 can good whole tomatoes, squished through your fingers into bite-sized pieces
1 pinch saffron, if you wish, you yellow-fingered temptress!

Saute garlic and onion in olive oil, add your favorite herbies--rosemary, thyme, herbes de provence and cook until translucent. Add tomatoes and fish stock and bring to a quiet and ladylike boil. Wait until you're just about ready to sit down to add the fish and shellfish to the stock. Cook until mussels and clams part their luscious lips and the calamari has curled its tentacles in ecstasy. Spoon into bowls and let it dribble down your chin.

August 29

Five years ago...
I was not a New Orleanienne when Hurricane Katrina struck, but for me and scores of other young, shiftless folk, that storm and its aftermath put the city on the map. New Orleans certainly didn't need us to get on the road to recovery, but after sucking up two and a half years of her soul, cracked sidewalks, stranger smiles, and gallows humor, I need her more than ever. We came from all over to be a part of something; every day I find out that more of my friends have decided to stay past the three-year stint they thought they were in for.
New Orleans doesn't need us, she's too stubborn for that, but that must be part of her seduction. Tonight, I'll be eating and drinking and toasting and singing in honor of my friends, near and far, who know what it's like to love this place.
